Mitochondrial MtDNA testing is done to determine whether two or more people (male or female) share the same maternal line.  MtDNA, an abbreviation for Mitochondrial DNA, is a type of DNA that is passed from females to their male and female offspring but is never passed on by males to their children. The test uses MtDNA to map what is known as the X-SV profile. If two siblings share the same X-SV profile, it is likely that they share the same maternal lineage.

 MtDNA is a reliable DNA test and has the benefit of undergoing little mutation from generation to generation. The MtDNA test will tell you whether two or more people share the same maternal line but cannot categorize the exact relationship. The test will not differentiate between people having the same maternal lineage.
